  1. After reading "Georgia O'Keefe" I believe that as a child she never had the right inspiration to become they painter she wanted to be. Georgia had seen a lot of paintings but could not really understand what the painter was expressing. I believe that she had her own views of her paintings. I liked the part when she talks about her daughter asking her who the painter was because it shows that her daughter was understanding the painting something she always wanted to do as a child. I also liked how she kept trying her best to impress "the men". She didn't stop painting until "the men" thought that her paintings were good enough.

  2. Getting to the point where the daughter was into the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe, which inspired her to become an artist was quite interesting. I read to this part where the daughter was making a correlation to the artist and the art they painted reveals some clue to who the actual painters are. I took that out of the reading because i think that goes with our lecture in English. Our writing expresses ourselves and when other reads our work, people can get the feeling of our happiness, our sadness, our expression out of our papers. Writing exposes our feelings to other and that this feeling is what makes us a good writer. We don't stop here either. Just like the daughter she didn't stop too. We just keep writing until we become better at it.

  3. I personally liked this story because it talked about the bumps in the road some artists face when trying to express themselves. Georgia's art was way more different than anyone else's. Everybody has their own style of doing things. Georgia O'Keefe's style was to be free rather than being constricted by what society thinks art really is. She had a different perspective on her own paintings than what others thought they really meant. Georgia wanted to prove that she was just as a good as any other artist and that is exactly what she did.

  4. Joan Didion starts the essay off with a strong introduction and it definitely caught my eye. Ms.O'Keeffe lived up to others expectations and that's what made her stronger. Eventually she grew up and stopped paying attention to how others felt and the negative comments that were constantly made. I would say that this is good writing because the vocabulary and the structure of the essay is perfectly fine to me. Overall, I enjoyed this article although I had to read it more than once to understand it a little better.

  5. I really liked what Joan’s daughter said about the paintings. She said that the paintings glory must have also been in the painter as the poem is in poet. I liked this part the most because I think there’s some truth to it. Every artist has their own unique style of painting and usually paints something that represents them in a way.

  6. "the painting was the painter as the poem is the poet, that every choice one made alone--every word chosen or rejected, every brush stroke laid or not laid down--betrayed one's character" This quote spoke to me very much because just as it says is what Georgia O' Keeffe did in the article it mentions that she was mortified when a sister corrected her drawing and in other parts of the article it mentions how people tried to tell her how to draw paint etc she didn't enjoy this or obey. In the article it also explains that at the age of twenty-four she left behind all those opinions by this being mentioned it brings thoughts to my mind that it is written for a purpose and that the purpose is to let us be aware that the things she went thru may have caused her to be a rebellious painter.

  7. In my opinion the first sentence was very important although Gergia O' Keeffe mentions that where she comes from isn't of importance the fact that she states it makes me wonder why and how her background made her into the strong women she became and where all her beliefs came from. Also the way it states she carried herself and the choice of words she has when judging other painters work. What stood out to me the most was her lack of pride when creating the american painting.

  8. Georgia O'Keeffe's actions of always challenging men and society was to show that there is no certain way or manual that defines an artist. She sought to express what she believed in through her paintings which had deep meaning and what they saw maybe was not what she saw. This in connection to elements of good writing is that this is no correct way to express what you think, what you right is what you believe and see. If they correct what you believe it's not your opinion no more. She later sought to please the "men" by painting what they thought was right and thought that she was begining to be a painter. Just like in writing people correct and teach us how to write the correct way. She fought to express her belief's in a different way.

  9. Georgia O'keeffe an artist that was very good at getting her paintings noticed in a way that she once made a cows head in the colors of red, white and blue that would get the attention of the people. It was hard for women to get recognition so O'keeffe had to find ways to get her message out to the people.

  10. Georgia O'Keeffe was a woman with an interesting background. She was brought down by men who believed she could not make it as an artist. But the thought of not giving up is what inspires people. She had her own style of painting. In english, the style of writing describes the writer's character. As O'Keeffe worked hard to make her own style, writers also have to constantly work hard to identify themselves with an unique character.

  11. Even though the story got me confused a little bit, i understood that Georgia O'Keeffe was a artist that loved to paint thanks to her daughter. She did not stop painting until she could get the approval of "men." They thought her painting did not have anything artistic at all. She thought that everybody had different ways to express their feelings, and i completely agree with that because not everybody is going to agree with you. I think if you are going to create or express something that you are feeling you do not have to impress anyone, as long as you think you did your best at expressing what you really felt is good enough. It really got me confused, so i had to read it many times.

  12. I respect what Georgia O’Keefe stands for, which is being a strong straight up person. Although she is a woman who had plenty of hardships she still rose above all of the doubts and did things her way and anyone who has the guts to stick to your heart no matter what it is I respect that. On paragraph 2 the writer states ‘Hardness has not been in our century a quality much admired in women’. This is still true in today’s world and I can’t even imagine what this could have been like in the 1830s. So I agree with the author that she is an inspirational strong woman.

  13. Didion's essay depicts the epitome of a "hard, straight shooter" in a strong woman such as Georgia O'Keeffe, the main protagonist. O'Keeffe's character shows that she does not let the people who judge her artwork lower her confidence, for she continues to preserve that boldness in the rest of her art career. Her actions signify the attitude of a tough, concentrated person who ignores those who disprove of what they represent.

  14. "I made you take time to look at what I saw and when you took time to really notice my flower you hung all your associations with flowers on my flower and you write about my flower as if I think and see what you think and see-and I don't." This quote stood out the most to me. Not only does it relate to her paintings but it relates to real life. Not everyone looks and sees life as you do. People can go through some of the same experiences and they won't look at things like you. When Georgia O'Keeffe looked at her paintings she didn't see what a person walking past would see. She looked beyond the surface of her paintings into something people didn't see.

  15. In the article, "Geeeorgia O'Keeffe," Ifind it interesting that the writer never once puts her name in the article. She talks about her daughter and how she feels about this painter is very prevelent in her writing. I love this writer and her style; like many of the writers I have felt connected with and inspire to, she rarely says "I" and she has this incredible ability to reveal who she is directly. It's always through her eyes and she kind of leaves you guessing on who she really is.

  16. Didions essay stated 'Style is character', and I believe its true. When someone wants to paint, draw, or write something, they usually do something that shows who they are and it's proved by Georgia O'Keefe. Didion talked about how Georgia O'Keefe was a woman that would openly say what was on her mind. The painting that Didion and her daughter went to see may have been shows her thoughts of what to me meant that women can do the same things as men can and sometimes even better. She may have painted a canvass full of clouds, but according to the description, the painting 'seemed to be several stories of emtpy light.' She went out and stood out with the way she painted differently with what women normally would.

  19. Joan Didions about a "straight shooter" woman named Georgia O'Keeffe, tells about her painting and how her society of city men influenced her style. Didions writing really let me understand and feel the anger Georgia O'Keefe had. The sentence that states "style is character," is true with painters, musicians, and writers. Everyone has there own unique way of expressing their thoughts. Style is the way we as the readers or listeners connect with the authors.

  20. I was very interested with Georgia O'Keefe's essay. It opened up my eyes on how women were not appreciated in a painting career. women were told to paint canvas of flowers and other girly paintings.I admired how Georgia O'Keefe did what she wanted to do. The cow skull was a great image that was brought to my attention. I thought how she chose to paint it was a great expression of her painting.

  21. I loved Georgia's attitude in the passage. Georgia was intrigued at a young age by something and decided to practice her art no matter what was people said. Georgia had to problem being different than the others. georgia did the opposite what they men did and was proud to do so. I was interested and enjoyed reading this passage. I think that she should have a certain amount of respect when it come to the subject of art
